Proud to have the most detailed work in this years

Proud to have the most detailed work in this years @jvm_muzejs competition exhibition on rural themes reflected in Latvian painting. 🖌️

One of the winning paintings was announced as “typical, simple, void of colour, yet still about rural life”. Thank goodness such luck didn’t befall on me! Feedback coming from a jury made up of mostly local tourism board members, and rural politicians btw. So, if one intends on winning next year, create a work that will NOT speak to anyone who’s a great artist, art historian or expert, or who doesn’t need glasses to see. And paint people really badly, like secondary school level bad. Since that seems to be the two most recent winner’s commonality. 🖼️

As for those who are attuned to the finer tastes, and appreciate exquisite craftsmanship and high levels of skill - there’s a chance to vote for your favourite work in the exhibition. I can think of at least five works deserving of such a prize, who to my bewilderment did not receive any other nominations. Cast your vote until November 1st! 🏆

Our bodies need nutrients, NOT cruelty. Protein, not flesh. Calcium, not milk from other species. Omegas, not fish. B12 is in the soil. Calcium is a mineral and is also found in the soil. Omega-3s are in the seaweed and micro algae. Go straight to the source of nutrients - eat plants! 🌱

Meet Matilda and Churchill! 🐢

Since July 2026 they have been teaching us new life skills, as six and a half year olds. We believe that they are The Central Asian tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii), also commonly known as the Afghan tortoise, the steppe tortoise, the Russian tortoise (mainly in the pet trade), Horsfield’s tortoise, the four-clawed tortoise, the four-toed tortoise, the Russian steppe tortoise, and the Soviet tortoise. They are a threatened species of tortoise in the family Testudinidae. The species is endemic to Central Asia from the Caspian Sea south through Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and east across Kazakhstan to Xinjiang, China. 🗺️

While it’s no doubt that tortoises are incredibly cute, they are not an “easy pet” to care for and live 50+ years! Please do research on different species, their care requirements, and lifespan before ever making the huge commitment to cohabitate with a tortoise. I also don’t condone purchasing any animal from the pet trade. They are not objects to be owned. 🤲💸❌

Matilda and Churchill came to us from not the best of conditions, but we are determined to make their lives as happy as possible. 🕊️

Oh please can someone just volunteer to do it for my anytime, every time, pretty please? 💛

Come see which one I picked in the end @depolatvija for an oil painting of a pond in Zaļenieki, made in July as part of the Jelgava Artist Sociey annual en plein air trip. 🦢

Wearing colour is political. It’s not about taste.

Wearing colour is political. It’s not about taste. It’s about control, power, and freedom. 🌸🌼💖

At least once every time that I leave a building I tend to experience some remarks, laughs out loud, or pointing and staring - while nudging whoever is accompanying the accomplice. 🙄

In Latvia it seems floral palazzo pants, pastel green tops, and pink pig shaped backpacks are more radical than fascism. ☠️

While at the same time - at least from my observations - those dressed in grey track suits, those favouriting the all black goth aesthetic, or older women with gaudy pink sparkling lip sticks and beret hats tend to get a pass in this society. They blend in. The once upon a time “alrernative” fashion - piercings, tattoos, all black - is very common here. It’s cool. Especially in the art scene. The seniors, or whoever, dressed in soviet era taste fashion are also dozens. Bros with black or other neutral colour crocs don’t even get noticed. Me, with my limited edition or jibbitz tuned up crocs on the other end, get taken secret photos of. Colourful Katrina! 👨‍🎤👵🏋️‍♂️

There’s plenty of people with purple, green, blue, orange, red hair that don’t get stared at as much as I do. Again, this is from personal experience sharing the same public spaces with such people and yet getting more attention than them as a natural brunette. Is it because I’m fat? Is that it? Fat people are not allowed to express individual personalities, joy, or have a more unique sense of style than the socially acceptable ‘alternative’ fashion? 🎅

Mostly I can at least attest that it’s always the most dull, boring, blended in individuals who harass me. Never the whichever personal style true baddies. 💅

The natural world is all colour. Question your own responses to others living their best life. Are you truly free? Are you empowered to express yourself authentically? What’s stopping you? Baddies support baddies. 💖💕💗

ENG: Who owns a mothers milk? 🥛

I’ve had an old veterinarian tell me that he regrets not trying his wife’s milk when she had just given birth to their child, many years ago in their youth.

How does the idea of a grown adult man drinking human milk make you feel?
Fresh from breast.

A mothers body sustains life and nurtures children. It is more often than not a body that is not deemed desired in the eyes of contemporary beauty standards, built on patriarchy and PDF aesthetics.

Today we had a rehearsal for our performance titled ‘Normal milk | PULSE 4’. The script is based on a completely true human story. We have two new performers joining our crew for this installment. There will be partial nudity, and themes of violence, assault, fetish culture, and of sexual nature will be explored. Parental guidance advised. Audience participation pending.

All mothers are welcome.

LV: Kam pieder mātes piens? 🍼
Kāds vecs veterinārārsts man reiz stāstīja, ka viņš nožēlo, ka nav nogaršojis savas sievas pienu, kad viņa tikko bija dzemdējusi viņu bērnu — tas notika pirms daudziem gadiem, kad viņi vēl bija jauni.
Kādas sajūtas tev rada doma par pieaugušu vīrieti, kurš dzer mātes pienu?
Pa tiešo no krūts.

Fun fact, I almost died from oyster mushroom poisoning once! ☠️

Because I tried the teeny tiniest piece raw - while I was living in Belfast, NI and completing my masters degree. Since I’ve had champignon (button) mushrooms raw plenty of times, and didn’t know that most other mushrooms are only edible after some heat treatment involved. And so, my curiosity to try the oyster mushrooms that my roommate was cutting up while cooking herself a meal, almost killed this Kat! 👅

Thankfully, my roommates took care of me while I was battling flu like food poisoning symptoms for 2 days. Amidst the pandemic taking over the world in the background.. 😷

As glad as I am for those two events to be over, I’ll be even more glad to see you on Saturday 1st August @veldze.radosarupnica for the summer rendition of @augamlv to celebrate all things mycelium! 🍄‍🟫🍄

The biennial kayaking on a river, with overnight camping, trip was a success this past weekend! This time around we began our journey near the Estonian border, from Staicele near its Paper Factory. We made our way along the quick stream of the Salaca river. Making camp for a night near The Red Cliffs landmark. Then, continuing our way to the final destination of Vecsalaca - stopping right next to the Manor Park. 🚣‍♀️🚣🏞️

On our journey we were accompanied by so many Beautiful Demoiselles, plenty of ducks, and even a huge salmon that jumped out of the water right at us! 🐟

The abundance of nature never ceases to surprise. I love that this is our Home. We must take care of it as best as we can. 🌍

If you are just as curious of a creature as I am, please register and attend my final two open studio sessions taking place this month:

Monday, 27. July 17:00-19:00
Wednesday, 29. July 15:00-17:00

I’ll show you all my favourite art materials - from USA and UK - and you’ll be able to try them for yourself and compare with more mainstream brands. We can also discuss some of the concepts behind my artworks. 👩🏻‍🎨

One of my favourite activities as a child was visiting factories and workshops as part of mostly school organised trips. It was fascinating to see how candles, crisps, and even toys are made. In fact, seeing behind the scenes of a making process is something that I strive to do anytime that I can, as an adult too. I’ve seen the plushie factory in my hometown a few years ago, and I will always take up an opportunity to see an artists studio too. 🚸

Thank you to each person who has attended my open studio events so far! 🫟

Second part of 2, third day report of the annual Jelgava Artists Society summer en plein air trip! After bathing in scenery of the splendid 27 hectare park surrounding the Green Manor (Zaļā Muiža), which was too glorious to even attempt to capture, I settled my mind on a corner of a special garden. Having finally also met the local family of swans, the day gifted me a rainbow just as I was finishing up the painting. And, the most stunning sunset blessed me on my walk back to the hotel through a light summer rain. 🌅

Slightly belated, part 1 of 2, third day report of the annual Jelgava Artists Society summer en plein air trip! On Friday, after finishing a painting I started the previous evening, we got a special tour of the Green Manor (Zaļā Muiža) in Zaļenieki. It’s a restoration college and the students get to restore the manor as part of their degree qualifications. Surrounded by a 27 hectare park, it is a place for the utmost enjoyable walks. 🌸🌼🌺

Second day report of the annual Jelgava Artists Society summer en plein air trip! The abundance of nature is heartwarming. There’s also a never ending amount of green shades. We visited a green church too, containing special paintings and stained glass windows made by artist friends of priests, and hand stitched and hand woven carpets made by the local ruling family once upon a time. The views from the church tower were spectacular. I am also once again reminded that the most beautiful scene usually doesn’t make for a successful painting. For it is far too beautiful to replicate. Instead, one should focus on capturing the ordinary. 🖼️

First day report of the annual Jelgava Artists Society summer en plein air trip! The sun is out, despite persistent rain threats. I am absolutely captivated by all the many changing elements that make up a pond composition. Along with the symphony performed by all the resident frogs. And, I even met a new four legged friend while painting! He was so sweet and nice. It feels good to be surrounded by so much nature, and so many different animals. 🎨🖌️🐾🐸🪷

As always, the process and final results of this painting trip will be first revealed on my Patreon page - link in bio to sign up for as little as €1 a month and get access to all the exclusive goodies! 👩🏻‍💻
